The rich history of surf and rock culture are often lost in conversations surrounding California. Festivals celebrating surf culture become centers of appropriating Hawaii, ignoring the West Coast’s beauty. This rebranding of the Ohana Rock Festival delves deeper into the intersections of rock and surf, as well as the graphic design styles that influenced and was influenced by these cultures. Inconsistent kerning, tight leading, dynamic yet reserved compositions, as well as keen interplay between type and photo subject relay the concept that there is more to surf than floral shirts and tiki torches.
